“tongshi” means “contemporary” in Chinese, which points out that playwrights’ creations for the present should be seen by their contemporaries. We want scripts to connect first and foremost with readers, audiences, practitioners, and performing companies in a readable way. Since 2018, we have been continuing to seek out and explore the best contemporary Chinese playwrights and scripts by reading, watching plays, attending stage-readings, listening to recommendations from peers and friends, and inviting these authors to make their works freely accessible.
